Dude...

Today has been an amazing day!

It's drop dead gorgeous, I spent an hour outside on the deck before work. Went to work, which was fun for the couple hours that I was there. But soon Steph stole me away from work to go for a walk. :P Who wants to waste the gorgeous day stuck inside, right?

We walked around town. So nice. My legs are a little sore. :P

We got to talking about driving again and Steph finally talked me into trying. So... I DROVE! YAY! This has been such a huge fear for me but we went out to the back roads where it's quiet and I drove. Ended up driving for 45 minutes and I didn't die or kill anyone else. I think I'm finally over the huge hurdle in getting my license. Now I can hopefully read the booklet without feeling sick and go take the test to get my L.

On top of this, there is SPN tonight. I just have to download the episode!

But even better, there is Alan Tudyk/Jared Padalecki porn. Wtf, I know, but still so hot.

Now I'm tired but it's way too early for bed so there might be some X-Files watching instead.

:D

WHAT THE HELL?

WHERE'D MY FIC INDEX GO?!

I swear, I didn't delete it! Not on purpose anyway. And I sure don't know how I would've done it accidentally. OMG! It's gonna take me so long to rebuild it. *cries*

And my day was going so well, too. *sigh*

The Repeat Case Against Chen06 aka Li Ping aka Ping aka Usagi Chiba aka Marcella

On March 26, 2008, [info]lightbird777 reported that [info]limulan aka Chen06 aka Li Ping aka Ping aka Usagi Chiba aka Marcella plagiarized multiple stories in the Detective Conan, Jane Eyre, Mulan, Sailor Moon, and X-Files fandoms. Her general mode of operation is to translate the fic, including the original title, into either German and/or Italian, and then post it as if she wrote it. Her behavior was previously addressed here. Since then she has continued her behavior, and in fact appears to be expanding the number of stories and their locations.

Please Note: there are several fics where we do not yet know the original author. I have not had an opportunity to check FFN or do any google-fu. Your help is greatly appreciated, especially if you have connections in the Jane Eyre, Sailor Moon, and X-Files.
Please keep reading, particularly if you are familiar with the Detective Conan, Jane Eyre, Mulan, Sailor Moon, or X-Files fandoms, and-or read German or Italian. )

I am sure there are all sorts of errors in my information, particularly in the Detective Conan fandom where something inspired a numbers theme, ex: 30 Memories, 30 Kisses, 40 Nights, etc. There seems to be more than one story with the same title. Please let me know when you find things that are inaccurate.

Mac Animate is set that if you are not a registered user, you can only access the site a finite amount of times. Given the language barrier, I am not registered, but it is my understanding that they have not yet removed the fic in question. (Although this was quite a while ago and may have changed by now.)

Erica's Fanfic Page (EFP) has a statement about removal of the fic.

[info]pengychan, [info]lightbird777, [info]bf_nightingale, and [info]defenderxl have been amazing in this case. They have really taken on the lion's share of work, which was particularly necessary since their Italian and German is far better than mine. They have been contacting the various sites and having fairly good luck in having the mods pull the stories and when possible ban Chen06 from posting. In fact, at the time that I was making caps, several of the sites had already pulled the stories.

I contacted Marcella on April 29, 2008. To date, I’ve received no reply. Given the information in this case, I will be adding Chen06/Li Ping/Ping/ Usagi Chiba to the list of known plagiarists.

I'm hopeful that this post will assist the sites that are sorting through Marcella's posts to pull her account and ban her if possible.

I am hoping to have another mod follow up with each of the authors that have been identified, both as a courtesy and in hopes they may recognize the missing fic.

ETA: Sorry, [info]pengychan! Didn't mean to leave you out! Thank you! Thank you!

ETA 2: As of May 15, 2008, she's been banned from Writers Arena.

Summary of the case against rensgurl4ever

The case against rensgurl4ever

On May 9th, 2008, it was reported to us that a person posting under the name of rensgurl4ever at deviantART, was posting art that was appeared to be traced or copied from multiple places, including both official manga and original fanart. (Please see the original report here.) I contacted rensgurl4ever, but to date I have not received a reply.

In comparing the art, some of it appears to be a direct copy.
rensgurl4ever’s artwork
original fanart from Tsuru Tsuru

Others appear to be copied, however certain panels or other characters have been removed, most notably the ones with dialogue, or the dialogue has been changed. Yet others appear to be copied, with mostly minimal changes such as hair.
rensgurl4ever’s version
original fanart

An additional supporting factor, was the two videos below that she has posted on You Tube
1)”My Tao Len drawings 2”
2)”My Drawings!”
Both of these videos contain drawings that are felt to demonstrate the artist’s true level of skill, and illustrate the marked difference between the art in question and her own level of skill, as there does not seem to be any middle ground showing clear progression of skills. Many of the images appear to clearly be tracings, and several are uncolored versions of the reported images.

It was determined that since the given images could not have been created without the use of the other’s works, and rengurl4ever’s own comments on the posted art work indicating that they were her own ideas and creations, and she has acknowledged on at least one occasion that she knew she should credit her source, this does indeed constitute a form of plagiarism.

Both YouTube and deviantART have been notified and we will continue to follow up on that.

For her plagiarism of Kipferl & archie-the-redcat at deviatART, and three doujinshi- Tsuru Tsuru, Chuchu, and Yui Mizushima, as well as the official Shaman King Manga,

Rensgurl4ever will be added to the list of known plagiarists.

Bored now. But not really. Okay, kinda

Had a great Mom's day. Went shopping, bought some clothes and then on Sunday, went to breakfast and later for dinner, hubby made some lasagna for me.

K gave me a drawing of her shadow and a little cute magnet she'd made at school. I need a memory box or a bigger one. All the stuff she makes for me is scattered in different places.

This has been making me giggle since yesterday:

I make it a point to go to 'I can has cheezburger' site about twice a day. It makes me smile.

Back to washing dishes and staring at a lump of clean clothes that won't magically fold itself.

Con_Txt Update

Indecisive fen: con_txt has extended registration--you can still register until May 31, but once that arrives, you're toast--they WON'T be having registration at the door.

And for people who are trying to decide whether to go or not, my hint for the Shy Person's Guide to Con Going is to over-schedule yourself. I know at the "sleep-away" cons I've gone to, I always thought that nobody would want to hang out with me, but a) there's just about always somebody in the Con Suite to chat with, b) if it's night, it must be a room party, and c) it's always "protocolaire," as the French say, to check the registration list, find people whose LJs you like but you haven't met face to face, and e-mail them to say that you love their Such and Such series, or their posts about Whatever, and you'd really like to meet them for coffee or a drink at the con.

Pigs2Men: More Cop Show Meta

With the usual caveat that these are the only three cop shows I'm familiar with, so I don't know if they're typical, and behind the cut for spoilers.

And, in less spoilery news, BTW, in The Shield, I've thought for a while that no wonder Vic married Corinne--she looks like a chibi!Vic. And now Maura (sp?) is starting to look like chibi!Shane.

Another continuum is the extent of dependence of the shows on the "Red Harvest" paradigm--i.e., cleaning up a town by sort of standing in the center of the circle as you encourage the various hoodlums to bump each other off. Robert Barnard said that there's a sub-group of Agatha Christie mysteries that get solved pretty much by all the suspects except one getting knocked off, and an increasing number of irons per show get pulled out of the fire by the elimination of much of the supporting cast. I think an important theme of "The Wire" is that the quality of thugs inevitably declines--people who had some kind of dignity and stature are replaced by their inferiors.

Meta: One of the Boys

Cop culture in HLOTS, The Wire, The Shield--BIIIIIG spoilers behind the cut, so in-progress HLOTS and Wire-watchers beware!

Just wanna say that there's a scene in The Shield S3 with Detective Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder) fooling around in the shower with her boyfriend--there just aren't that many scene of middle-aged CoCs perceived as sexual beings. (Well, OK, I guess you could argue that Lt-then-Captain Daniels in The Wire is middle-aged.)

On May 6th, a "sporking" of a deviantart account containing pictures of a Mary Sue paired with Tao Ren of the Shaman King fandom was posting in [info]marysues. A friend sent me some links to some pieces she thought were weird, disturbing, or laughable. After she showed me one that I recognized instantly as a page from the original Shaman King manga, I went through her gallery, trying to see if this was the only instance in which she had traced a picture and passed it off as her own.

Different Shows--In Some Cases Literally

Lalala, just watched, ummm, three episodes of The Shield, which, except for cryptoxin, *none* of my friends is watching. I'm almost done with S3, so I'm halfway through the already-aired episodes (S7 will start in September, and at this point I'm actually surprised that they'll have *any* of the original characters alive.) It has a certain horrid fascination--it's like the series version of "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," where every episode another flaming torch and chainsaw joins the ones already being juggled. "Natura Naturans" (Nature naturing) was a medieval trope--well, this is "Vile people doing vile things." So I can't exactly *recommend* it, but...

However, despite intensive scratching at various doors and whining, I still haven't succeeded in getting anybody to watch "Sleeper Cell." I think it's a brilliantly crafted show, with very sophisticated handling of ethical and political issues, and a mostly-characters-of-color cast, including a canon gay character (also true of The Shield). As a suspense show, they kind of are handcuffed by the fact that nobody believes the show is going to Go There and actually destroy Los Angeles.

I just got Netflix of Hu$tle, which in S4 is definitely Hamlet Without the Prince (or, since the missing person is Adrian Lester, possibly As You Like It Without the Rosalind) and, like the people I know, I think I'm watching the Fabulous Caper Plots But They Never Followed Through on the Character Development and If You Don't Have Mickey Why Bother? show. Although I suppose there are still a few more episodes for Danny to think he and the crew have been Betrayed...

The Mal/Simon Show is not particularly unpopular, and come to think of it, this is the second fandom in a row where I've liked a popular pairing. In succession to the Avon is Always Right Or At Least Making More Sense Than Those Other Fools show.

I was about to write about the shows I *stopped* watching but I figured it would be pointlessly inflammatory.

Questions meme from everybody, most recently mofic. Ask me the questions (in comments), then post the blank questions in YOUR LJ.

1. What do you think of _____________ ?

2. When did you last ____________?

3. __________ or ___________ and why?

4. What did you ______________?

5. What's your favorite ______________?

6. How would you ______________?

I bailed out after about an hour of Camelot on PBS, just couldn't stand the book--yeah, right, the whole mess is because Guenevere is a dumb bitch who lives to cause trouble. But, DAMN, Marin Mazzie can sing. Gabriel Byrne...can't.

Hello, Folks, We're Into the Follies

I went to an excellent production of "Follies" with the former mulberryfields (former in the sense of no longer being on LJ). Time Out NY described it as a concert version but I'd say it was a full production, albeit without much scenery. (Buddy had a wonderful little plywood car slung around his neck for "The God Why Don't You Love Me Oh You Do I'll See You Later Blues" so I'd have to give props for the props, and the lighting and costumes were also excellent.) The orchestra, alas, was a little o'erparted, and if it was up to me they would have just gone with the two-piano reduction, theaters smaller than the kitchen in your studio apartment, for the use of.

What surprised me is that I've always thought of Follies as The Sally Show, and here she was the weakest link, so it became the Ben Show Also the Buddy Show. (I know better than to describe it as the Ben and Buddy Show around you guys.) Young Ben didn't have a lot of stage time, so he had to work broadly--he was delectably hissably smug and (in its mundane sense) smarmy.

It was the Wings Theater Company, and they had framed posters from past seasons, including a musical from the 1980-1 season called "The Captain and the Cabin Boy" that, well, seemed to be just what we would have done with the prompt.

CON NOTE: Registration for con_txt ends May 12, so all aboard that's going aboard! It's too late to submit a panel suggestion, but the poll for the final program is up now at the Website.
